Challenge
Small canvases always challenge me. I have less space but the same number of elements to work with. I need the message to be just as clear and effective, and grabbing the user's attention with a tiny graphic is even harder.
Working with a brand element makes it harder still. For this challenge, I chose Zoom because I had been using it for work for years already. As it is the top-of-mind app for making video calls, I had to make this brand equity evident even on a small visual asset.
Action
I weighed three primary considerations: brand association, brand equity, and readability.
Given this, I decided to rework its classic video cam icon while also doing a play on the word "zoom". I used Figma’s glass effect for a fresh look, but toned down the distortion to keep the word mark readable. I also kept the brand’s shade of blue to further strengthen brand association.
Anyone else hear the Zoom call music while looking at the icon?
